What is it?!
BODYSHOCK's children's class has been developed for children between the ages of five-ish and twelve-ish*. The class combines the most fun elements and exercises from our three adult classes: Angkán Felices Kaliradman, Capoeira and Muay Thai-Boran and is designed to challenge your child's motor and musical abilities, her stamina, coordination and concentration. Your child will (learn how to) sweat and try his hardest because we do not hand out praise simply for attending; instead your child will have to earn it. Most children prefer this to the "everyone's a winner" attitude. We aim high so your child has to stretch to reach it...
*depends on the child and her abilities/desire to join in
What exactly do you do in the children's class ?
As with the grown-ups, we start off with a bit of a warm-up. This tends to be in the form of a game (i.e. being chased around the hall by someone spinning a boxing glove on a rope - they REALLY love that one!). Then we get down to the main course: sometimes coordination exercises with Kaliradman sticks, sometimes acrobatics taken from Capoeira, sometimes with defensive techniques and kicks from Muay Thai-Boran, sometimes with drumming and music (which is a part of all the martial arts we teach). What is trained depends on the age, number and ability of the children taking part. This martial arts "selection box" is useful for children to get a feel for the martial art they might like to train later as teenagers. The class ends with a formal ceremony.
Why would my child need to learn martial arts at BODYSHOCK?
Well, your child is in all likelihood a good deal fatter and a good deal less fit than you yourself were at that age. There we've said it!! Your child probably needs the exercise, quite simply! The advantage of BODYSHOCK is that we inspire children to do their best by teaching them stuff that is really worthwhile and fun. You've probably seen those shows on TV where a five year old in a karate suit "beats up" an adult. Really cute to be sure. Also really unrealistic and really misleading. We don't do cute, we do hard work, fun, and yes, we actually expect them to do push-ups!!!
What should my child wear for training at BODYSHOCK ?
Loose-fitting sweatpants and a t-shirt (comfortable clothes for moving around in, in other words). Training is done barefoot.
Does my child need any special equipment?
Nope! Well, actually she will need equipment but BODYSHOCK provides it (sticks, helmets, drums and a bunch of other wierd and wonderful instruments). The only other thing we advise is that your child has had a good night's sleep before hand so that she is ready to enjoy the fun!
When can my child try out the children's class?
Thursdays from 4.15 pm until 5.15 pm (free and with no obligation, of course)You can download the Free Tryout Form here. Please hand it in to the trainer before your child takes part! Here is our class schedule again.
